So I got only 26k km (18k miles) on my Z, but was wondering about oil catch cans and carbon build up considering those 26k km consisted of alot of spirited driving.

I ordered Z1 catch can for pcv side, it should hopefully arrive by next month. For now should I worry about carbon build up in the engine? How bad is carbon build up in the vr30? So far I have properly maintained it and serviced it every 10k km (6000 miles) or less. I notice engine oil is down by end of service period by around 600-800ml.

Anyhow, I was thinking of cleaning off the intake valves by the next service, assuming there is sufficient build up to do so. So yeah, am I too late installing the catch can? Do I need to clean off the intake valves before installing the catch can? And if so, how should I do it?

I put on a catch can just because I think it has to be better not to send that gunk into the intake. But from what I've read and watched, mechanics are very mixed over whether it really does anything for the engine. With spirited driving the PVC turns off anyway, it's the grandma daily driving that produces all the gunk that the catch can gathers.

I don't think you've hurt anything but I'm no expert.

The truth is you could probably drive this engine for 150,000 miles without doing anything to it and it would function just fine with no issues as long as you kept up with oil changes.

I dont know really Ive just seen some pics of gunk on the intake valves and got worried. Not really too sure anymore, but I guess ill have the catch can get installed anyway considering I ordered one. I might also switch to different engine oil, prolly thicker.

Since I installed a catch can I saw a huge decrease in exhaust soot at the tips. Now that I upgraded the exhaust I see even less.

I have also seen significantly less soot.

Does anyone know if it's possible to scope the intake valves instead of having to pull the intake.
