I just filled my car with gas today (maybe the 5th or 6th time since new), but something caught my attention this time.
I noticed that there doesn't seem to be a flap in the filler neck, and I also noticed that the gas nozzle doesn't go all the way in, it seems to hit a wall in there, about 3 or 4" in the filler neck.
All that said, it fills with fuel perfectly, and doesn't under fill or splash out. I would imagine that if there actually is a wall in there, the back pressure would shut the pump off. So, even though it feels like the nozzle hits a wall preventing it from going in fully, I'm betting that's not the case, since it works perfectly.
Does that sound normal? I never had a car where the nozzle didn't fit in, up to the stopper ring on the nozzle.

Yup! Perfectly normal. I thought the same thing you did but realized it's to prevent the gas handle from hitting the car at all. It kind of "floats" there when stuck in. It does seem to hit a wall as you say and doesn't seem to go in as deep as other cars but it's by design with how the fuel door / body moldings are around it.

Thanks! It did seem weird, but as you mentioned, it makes perfect sense to keep the handle from hitting the side of the car.
I need to take a better look in there to see how it's designed because I'm amazed that it feels like a hard stop, but then doesn't obstruct the flow of fuel

It bugged me, so I looked in the tube with an inspection camera. It makes perfect sense now. There are two tabs in the filler that stick out just enough to stop the filler from going in any further. Nothing is really obstructing the flow of fuel.
