LSD options?

If I understand correctly, the LSD in the 23+ Z is a clutch type.

What are the pros/cons of it over a helical type?

The helical would outlast a clutch type, so why do you think Nissan choose it?

Clutch type "wears". Helical ,if it effs up, you have bigger issues as either lash, or it eating itself.

If you are beating the crap out of your LSD that bad, you are a racer or drifter.

Clutch type is usually a 2 way or a 1.5 way, that means its active during acceleration and deceleration. It can also chatter at low speeds when making tight turns. Its also tunable in how hard the lockup is and how quickly it can come on, but has to be disassembled to make any changes. Depending on the brand it may require special oil.

Helical type is a 1 way, its only active during acceleration and will only work when both wheels are touching the ground. Has smoother operation when just cruising around. No special oil is required as there are not clutched inside and less frequent oil changes required.

How often are we supposed to change the oil in the rear diff?

Ah ok.. i found it...

every 20k miles

and i see brake fluid should be changed every 20k also...

I have a factory brand new LSD on the way from Nissan. I plan on putting the Z1 bigger cover on it.

Doing a bunch of reading to figure out what fluid / break in additive (If any) I should use.

Putting in the urethane bushings too.

Does anyone know of the best aftermarket alternatives for LSD? I see on Conceptzperformance they have a few choices but I don't know right from left on the drop-down options.

2 options:

1: (What I did). Buy 38301-EL45B from parts.nissanusa.com . Use the 15% off coupon. You then have a spare diff to get you home. This option is cheaper than .....

2: Buy a Z1 LSD, 2 new stub axles, new cover, cooler, urethane bushings, and diff support brace. Have it built by someone who knows WTH they're doing (About 3-5 hrs labor).

I would bet the Z1 LSD is stronger than the stock performance one (Part # 38301-EL45B).

Thanks for the reply. No endurance racing or time attack. Just planning lots of track weekends doing HPDE. To your point the stock LSD might be more than capable. I'm coming from the 370Z Sport which has the VLSD which more or less started acting like an open diff when hot. After researching seems like it's not going to be the same problem here, but was curious if there was a better LSD than Nissan provided - without the drawbacks you laid out with the Z1 option.

Well, since you are in ATL, you could just drive to Z1. Just the shipping saving there would be like a 50% off coupon!

Which Z1 diff cover are you referring to?

Cant wait to hear more about this. Im still saving for one. When I get one, I will follow your process

Unfortunately (or fortunately?) although the discount code worked it is a local pickup for me and it still is around $2,000 before tax. It's not an immediate need right now (need to do surgery to move 370 suspension components to the new Z). But will keep looking and update here if I decide to go factory or aftermarket. Another thread suggested looking at used on eBay or marketplace. Guess that couldn't hurt?

I believe you should get the Nismo 1.5 way GT LSD. I've equipped it in my Nissan Z sport 6 speed. There is minor chattering at low speeds, after 600 miles it's very quiet- occasionally lifting off at speeds it chatters but it's a nice noise. When it comes to cornering; it makes a world of difference, the power comes down with ease and the controlabillity is all there with the plus of being durable. Z1 has a video on it. That is a great suggestion! I was also leaning towards this but wasn't aware if anyone else had tried this yet. Do you have yours set to Low, Medium, or High? I might be referring to the Nismo 1.5 way GT LSD Pro. Do you have that one?
